TENANT SCREENING/CREDIT REPORTING

Members of MMAA gain access to the Jefferson City Credit Bureau's "Tenant Screening Service". This Tenant Screening Service, which includes a credit report, is available to all MMAA members at a reduced price. This Screening Service allows owners to better identify qualified renters and helps eliminate the undesirable ones.

1992 When the City insisted on a new smoke alarm ordinance, we negotiated a smoke alarm ordinance we could live with.

1994 MMAA helped the City negotiate a trash contract that was beneficial to apartment owners. Saving hundreds and in some cases thousands of dollars for apartment owners annually.

1998 MMAA was instrumental in getting the City to raise the fine for illegal dumping from $50 to $300.

2007 MMAA helped to insure the landlord registration that was passed did not create any additional requirements than to provide minimal contact information.

MMAA membership meetings. Expert speakers on timely apartment owner/management issues. Interaction with other apartment owners and managers about common problems.

MISSOURI APARTMENT ASSOCIATION (MAA)

1989 MAA passed HB-602 which prohibits rent control in a community, unless it is statewide.

1994 MAA passed SB-744 that removed sales tax on utilities in apartments.

1995 MAA passed HB-211 that put all apartments back into the residential category for tax purposes, saving the apartment owners millions of dollars.

1997 MAA passed HB-361 that made the first major and positive change in the landlord tenant law since 1949.

In addition to these legislative successes, MAA stopped or amended over 50 pieces of proposed legislation which would have been detrimental to the apartment industry. These bills covered subjects such as; rent control, interest on security deposits, repairs and deductions, on site security officers, licensing of maintenance workers, retaliatory evictions and many others to numerous to mention.

NATIONAL APARTMENT ASSOCIATION (NAA)

NAA monitors and lobbies Congress and federal agencies regarding issues of importance to the apartment industry.

NAA is represented on national and international standards and code committees.

NAA publications (Units the NAA Journal, numerous fact sheets and legislative alerts, and many monographs on issues related to the apartment industry).

NAA conducts surveys and research on issues of importance to the apartment industry.

NAA provides speakers to local member associations.
